- : need some help.
- :
- : 1. Where can she purchase modem/software for dial up access to the Net?
-
- Any terminal program will allow such access. There are several available
- on Aminet ... but you need either network access or a CD-ROM drive to
- access that resource. Buy an Amiga magazine (local bookstores should have
- -something-) and check out the PD services.
-
- : 2. Are there online resources I can download? If so, where?
-
- Yes. Aminet is a great source. A lot of it requires a newer OS than the
- 1.3 she is likely to be running.
-
- : 3. Suggestions for freeware/shareware tools for usenet, mail, etc.
-
- Don't even think it unless she has the latest OS. It's available, but the
- effort required in setting it up is seriously non-trivial.
-
- : 4. She has not used her Amiga for some years. She has been toiling in the
- : broadcast arena(Paintbox, etc). Are there enough resources available for her
- : to go back to the Amiga and do her artwork...or would she be better off going
- : with a new Mac or PC?(I realize there is a pro amiga bias in here...but she
- : has no new software, everything is 5 years old or more...so objective

-
- There -are- no "objective" responses to such a question. I have four
- "paint" packages that are about as good as they get without spending
- serious money. I have two 3D programs that are as good as you can get
- without spending a heavy bundle on hardware and then another bundle on
- software. Most of this stuff came from cover disks. You may not be
- familiar with that concept. When Impulse released Imagine 4.0, they made
- a deal with a magazine for the right to distribute a limited version of
- Imagine 3.0 with an issue of the magazine. Full program, but limited to
- the PAL version, no FPU, and fewer extras.
- What are her intentions? She may want to spend the money for a new system
- regardless of which platform she goes with. The current big-box Amiga
- costs a bundle! There is an entry-level version which may not satisfy.
- There is a new model due in the Fall that should satisfy without forcing
- her to sell her car.
- Going with the old Amiga is the only option she has right now. She should
- buy a number of Amiga mags over the next few months to see what is there.
- Chances are that she will decide that she needs a new system in order to
- be happy. None is better than the Amiga, but the others are not to be
- ignored. Her five year old OS is likely to be boring, but any new system
- will have better. She needs to shop.
